Who has a better Clasico record, Real Madrid or Barcelona?

Heavyweight teams from Catalunya and the Spanish capital constantly provide entertainment in what is perhaps the most famous laliga rivalry.

Their respective divisions have been filled with match-winners because both have large budgets and reputations that draw world-class talent from all over the globe.

But in a well-known conflict that began in 1929, who has prevailed? GOAL examines the outcomes of some of the largest club football organizations in head-to-head matches.

Head-to-head between Real Madrid and Barcelona

The 249th professional Clasico took place at Santiago Bernabeu in March 2022. However, Madrid and Barcelona have also met 33 times in friendly games and other non-competitive contests.

Objective, who have already achieved a century of victories, has bragging rights in competition outings, but Barca gains the upper hand when exhibition games are thrown into the mix. Overall, the head-to-head record between the sides has been quite close.

The Supercopa de Espaa and Copa de la Liga are two other tournaments. Exhibition games and preseason friendlies are excluded.

The sample is substantially lower when there is no competition. The two teams have faced off in 33 exhibition matches, with Barca winning 19. There have only been four victories for Real and ten ties.

Pep Guardiola was hired as Barcelona’s coach in the summer of 2008, and things began to shift considerably in their favor.

Following Guardiola’s arrival, Barcelona won 13, drew 4, and lost 6 of the Clasicos played in La Liga. They also triumphed in the Champions League semifinal in 2010–11, the first time the teams had faced one another in that tournament since 2002.

The Blaugrana’s cause has been hampered by the retirement of Guardiola from the manager’s chair and the retirement of 7-times Ballon d’Or winners Lionel Messi from the playing field. However, they remain highly competitive and contend with previous rivals for significant awards.

The trophy cases for Barcelona vs. Real Madrid

With eight more league titles than the Blaugrana, Los Blancos earned 34 league championships, a Spanish record. At 13 to Barca’s five, they also have a significant lead in the Champions League.

Real earned the UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League) thrice, but Barca holds the record for most victories in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, which is no longer in existence, with four. The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which later became the UEFA Cup, was won three times by Barca, although it was before UEFA took over the competition’s administration.

However, Barca has twelve times as many Copa del Rey titles as Madrid, and you can observe their recent dominance in the fact they are not too far behind whenever it comes to Clubs World Cups – a tournament that just began in 2000.

Again, a deeper examination of more recent history paints Barcelona in a more positive light.

They have 16 La Liga titles to Madrid’s nine since the 1990–91 campaign. Barcelona has won the European championship five times, with Madrid coming in second with six victories.

Although English, Italian, and German teams dominated Europe within the 1970s and 1980s, both clubs had a barren period, which is why the Clasico rivals’ different European records may be linked to the previous two decades.

With five consecutive victories between 1956 and 1960 and one more in 1966, Madrid dominated the early days of the European Cup. Between 1950 and 1980, they outperformed Barça in La Liga, capturing it 18 times to Barca’s five.
