Automotive Wiring and Electrical Systems

INTRODUCTION

Thanks for picking up this book! The whole intent of my writing is to demystify the practice of automotive wiring in general. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve overheard people say that they hate wiring or that wiring is their least favorite part of a project. Since you’ve got this book in your hand, I’m sure you know exactly what I mean.

I’ve never really understood why wiring has gotten such a bad rap—after all, it’s really quite simple. Over the years, I’ve learned the hard way how to do a job right the first time. Automotive wiring is not a topic to be taken lightly.

In fact, a simple mistake can cause a fire in your prized vehicle. You’d be surprised if you knew what I’ve seen under the dashes of the nicest of cars over the years. You’d be even more surprised at how simple it is to avoid these pitfalls altogether and do it right the first time

So, why did you pick up this book, to begin with? I mean, after all, automotive wiring is like calculus to most people! The answer is simple—you picked up this book because.

  • You need help troubleshooting an electrical problem.
  • You need help installing aftermarket electronics.
  • You wanted to become the expert in this topic.
  • Most importantly, you want to be able to do all of the above safely.

Again, this book is intended to demystify the practice so it won’t read like a college-level physics book. After you’ve read it, you’ll be able to do all of the above and so much more! To make the material easy to follow and learn, I’ve written the book so that each chapter provides you with the knowledge needed to comprehend the following chapter.

In addition, I’ve provided as many pictures and diagrams as I could, so that you can visualize my explanations. Finally, I’ve provided several step-by-step examples that you can do in your garage so that you can practice what you see on these pages.

Here’s a quick rundown of my qualifications for writing a book of this nature. As of this writing, I’m 38 years old and have been a car guy for as long as I can remember. Early on, my talents leaned toward automotive electronics— stereo systems, auto security, etc.

THE END

I began installing car stereo systems in my parent’s driveway at the age of 14, and by the time I graduated high school I was known as the “car stereo guy.” Early on in my career, I spent seven years installing automotive electronics of all kinds to earn a living. Many years later, I’m still involved with the car stereo industry. During my 20 years in the profession, I’ve been fortunate enough to work for two different manufacturers —Clifford Electronics and Rockford Fosgate. And lastly, I’m a hot rodder!
